Description
Desirable AU 1871-CC Double Eagle
1871-CC $20 AU50 NGC. One of the pleasures of cataloging coins for Heritage is the unparalleled opportunity to see multiple examples of some truly rare coins. The present sale is rich in specimens of the 1871-CC double eagle, including this lustrous AU coin. An issue that is virtually unknown in Mint State, the 1871-CC double eagles were sorely needed in the Western economy of the era; most circulated heavily. Today the average certified survivor grades only somewhere between XF and Choice XF.This coin shows even friction over the high points, with the numerous light abrasions expected for a double eagle that has seen 10 points of circulation wear. The only singular mark is one on the reverse below the left scroll, between the U and T of UNITED. Census: 21 in 50, 76 finer (1/09).(Registry values: N1793)
