Description

High Grade 1875-CC Five Dollar Gold

1875-CC $5 AU55 PCGS. Winter 1-B. A very attractive example of this very elusive date in high grades. The strike is fairly sharp for this date, with minor weakness seen on the E of LIBERTY but her hair bun is generally well defined. On the reverse there is weakness on the horizontal shield lines on the right half of that device. The eagle's wings and claws show clear definition from the dies. This is the double reverse die as noted in Breen's Encyclopedia with minor doubling seen on the base of FIVE D. Excellent color with rose-gold and copper surrounding the devices, with some luster in the protected areas. NGC and PCGS have graded a combined 18 this high with a scant six coins finer. An important offering for the specialist, and about as nice as this date is found.
