Description

Desirable 1895 Double Eagle PR64 Cameo

1895 $20 PR64 Cameo NGC. Both sides exhibit stark contrast between the fields and the devices, being kept from a Gem designation primarily by a few widely scattered, nearly imperceptible hairlines. Mint records show that a paltry 51 proof Double Eagles were minted in 1895, but hard times from the Great Depression and the gold recall in 1933 served to cut the number of survivors by at least half. Part of an 1895 proof set, the other pieces from the set are offered individually throughout the catalog. Population: 6 in 64 Cameo, 1 finer (11/04).(#89111) (Registry values: P2)
