Key Date 1921 Saint-Gaudens in Mint State

1921 $20 MS62 NGC. One of the rarest dates in the entire Saint-Gaudens series and especially rare in any mint state grades. This coin is very attractive for the grade, with ample luster in the fields and generally clean surfaces. There is the expected softness on the high points for the grade, with areas of broken frost from handling. Enough luster to please the eye, and while scattered handling marks can be found with a glass, none are individually worthy of note.
David Akers notes that this date is the fourth rarest in mint state grades behind the 1933, 1927-D and 1907 Extremely High Relief. While the 1930-S and 1931-D are technically rarer, there are more mint state coins of each of those dates as compared with the 1921 issue. Apparently the vast majority of the 1921 double eagles were melted in 1933-34, after the great call-in for all gold in America, and this event decimated the original mintage of 528,500 down to a few hundred pieces at most. There are several that have turned up from the European banks, but most of those show extensive handling marks. On this particular coin we note a minor die crack through the middle of UN of UNITED which extends down through the eagle's upper beak into the field below plus two other cracks can be seen in the upper reverse lettering. The combined NGC and PCGS population reports show 43 examples graded this high with 21 coins graded finer of this date.
