Description
High Grade JR-3 1796 Dime, AU53 PCGS
1796 10C AU53 PCGS. JR-3, R.5. This interesting variety shows the TY in LIBERTY touching on the obverse, with the leaves touching E3 and A3 on the reverse. While not the terminal die state, this is a late intermediate state that has a retained die cud over the first T in STATES. This particular coin does not show the planchet cut on the reverse rim where a small chip adhered to the die--a feature seen on many JR-3 dimes. The JR-3 variety is the second rarest of the year with only 5% or so of the 1796-dated dimes known from this die pairing. We sold what is surely the finest JR-3 in our ANA Sale last year, an MS63 example, and it was from the same die state as this piece. The bright surfaces retain generous amounts of mint luster around the devices and each side has a light overlay of golden patina. A short grease stain (as struck) is located just below Liberty's ear. Well struck except for the peripheral stars on the right side of the obverse.(Registry values: P7)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 236B, PCGS# 4461, GSID# 3957)
