Superlative 2008-D Cent, MS68 Red
The 100th Annual Lincoln Cent Issue

2008-D 1C MS68 Red PCGS. With all the celebrations taking place this year to honor Abraham Lincoln on the 200th anniversary of his birth, and the 100th anniversary of the Lincoln cent, it is important to remember that 2008, not 2009, is the 100th year of Lincoln cent production. This example was struck at the Denver Mint, a facility that had its start at the very end of Lincoln's Presidency, although it would be many more years before actual coinage operations started.
This example is certified as a normal circulation strike 2008-D Lincoln cent, and it has a PCGS population of just four examples in MS68 Red, with none finer (1/09). Another variety is the Satin Finish 2008-D cent that was produced specially for collectors. More than 400 of those have been certified at this same grade level, with 42 more in MS69 Red. It is highly important to distinguish between the two different issues. The advanced PCGS Registry Set collector will want to be successful bidding on this coin to gain that extra little advantage over other Lincoln cent collectors. There are currently 80 individual collectors of PCGS-certified Lincoln Memorial cents, including major varieties.
An incredible, superlative Superb Gem, this unsurpassable example has a bold strike that shows every feature from the die. The surfaces have fully brilliant and highly lustrous satin gloss with blazing pink color and traces of copper-orange toning. The number of tiny imperfections that prevent an even higher grade can almost literally be counted on one hand. This coin was struck early in the life of the individual coinage dies, showing no evidence of clash marks, die cracks, or other signs of die wear on either side.
