Near-Gem Wire Rim High Relief
MCMVII Double Eagle

1907 $20 High Relief, Wire Rim MS64 PCGS. The population of 1907 High Relief twenties drops precipitously beyond the MS64 level. Collectors can expect a full Gem piece to cost nearly double that of an MS64 example. For this reason, near-Gems--such as the current offering--elicit much attention when appearing at auction. Dave Bowers, in his Guide Book of Double Eagle Gold Coins (2004), offers the following advice to those pursuing a 1907 High Relief double eagle: "Select an example with care, checking the high parts of the relief for rubbing or marks, particularly at Miss Liberty's bosom and, most obviously, on her knee." For the current offering we note only one mark worthy of mention; a small abrasion on Liberty's right (facing) shin. Otherwise, the high points are pleasantly well preserved and the luster is rich. The immediate eye appeal of this Wire Rim twenty is comparable to that of a finer piece. Housed in a green label holder.(Registry values: N7079)
