Description

Desirable 1908-S Saint-Gaudens Twenty, MS65

1908-S $20 MS65 PCGS. In 1908, all three active mints--Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco--struck Saint-Gaudens double eagles. Philadelphia produced over 4.2 million examples of the No Motto variety and an additional 150,000-plus With Motto pieces. Denver's production was more subdued, yet it managed to produce over 1 million double eagles that year, with a roughly two-for-one ratio between No Motto and With Motto representatives.
San Francisco's output, however, bordered on the nominal; in a striking contrast to that mint's multimillion-coin production of both the Liberty Head pieces of 1907 and the Saint-Gaudens twenties of 1909, it issued a mere 22,000 examples of the 1908, all With Motto coins. As one might surmise, acquiring a survivor is challenging. Q. David Bowers writes in his Guide Book of Double Eagle Gold Coins, "Today, examples are elusive in all grades, but thanks to importations of the current generation, such coins in MS-62 and MS-64 are much more available than they were prior to the 1980s."
Gems such as the present piece, however, have always been condition rarities. This coin offers marvelous eye appeal from a variety of sources, including immensely lustrous yellow-gold surfaces; bold detail, both on the central devices and the peripheral elements; and a delightful absence of significant distractions. Slight traces of alloy at the reverse rim add character to the coin. Population: 14 in 65, 14 finer (1/09).(Registry values: N7079)
