Description

Exceptional 1895 Quarter Eagle, PR67 Ultra Cameo

1895 $2 1/2 PR67 Ultra Cameo NGC. Only 119 proof quarter eagles were struck in 1895. Of that number perhaps 35-40 pieces are known today, and the majority are PR64 or better. Like other high grade proofs we have seen from this year, this piece shows pronounced orange-peel texture in the fields--a common trait on proof gold from the 1880s and 1890s. Nearly flawless from the standpoint of preservation, the only "defects" on this piece are Mint-made. A short lint mark is located between stars 1 and 2, and the die appears to be partially filled on the denomination on the lower reverse. The coin has a rich reddish-orange coloration and the devices are very strongly contrasted with illimitable depth of mirrored reflectivity in the fields and thick mint frost over the devices. This is the finest Ultra Cameo certified of this date by NGC, and PCGS has graded five in the same condition, but none are finer at either service.
