Description

1898 Quarter Eagle, Proof 67 ★ Ultra Cameo

1898 $2 1/2 PR67 ★ Ultra Cameo NGC. This unsung rarity among proof Liberty quarter eagles comes from an original proof mintage of a mere 165 coins, with about 55 examples now believed to exist. While NGC and PCGS have each recorded a few amazing examples, a considerable number of examples are impaired. The typically offered specimen grades no finer than Proof 65. This specimen, and a specimen it is in every sense of the word, offers bold, gold-on-black contrast between the glassy fields and the devices that drip with heavy frost. The pristine fields are essentially free of hairlines or marks. Close perusal with a glass does reveal a tiny round dot indentation between star one and Liberty's neck that can be used as a future pedigree identifier. NGC's Census Report records two examples graded Proof 67 ★ Ultra Cameo, with eight graded finer (11/05).(Registry values: P2)
