Very Rare Late Die State
Noe-8 Oak Tree Shilling XF45

1652 SHILNG Oak Tree Shilling XF45 NGC. Crosby 5-A, Noe-8, High R.6. IN at Bottom. 71.0 gn. An important example of this rare Oak Tree variety. A late die state (not seen in the Hain Family Collection) with a prominent break on the obverse near the peak of the tree, and the reverse die is failing near the L in ENGLAND. Mint luster nonetheless shimmers throughout, and the apple-green and tan-gold surfaces are unblemished. Described for its ANR auction appearance as "graded Uncirculated in the Stearns sale, the cataloguer completely agrees with that assessment. ... A really remarkable example, far finer than the Ford coin which realized $18,000." Somewhat wavy, as usual and as made. Listed on page 37 of the 2009 Guide Book.
Ex: C.H. Stearns Collection (Mayflower, 12/1966), lot 34; Glode M. Requa Collection (American Numismatic Rarities, 9/2006), lot 3.
