Description

The Garrett-Ford 1722 Rosa Americana Penny
GEORGIVS / VTILE DVLCI
Finer of Two Known

1722 PENNY GEORGIVS PR65 Brown PCGS. CAC Ex: Garrett. Breen-111. The Breen plate coin in his Complete Encyclopedia. The rich brown color and considerable traces of original orange mint color clearly identify this piece as a copper impression (Breen-111) rather than bath metal (Breen-110). John Ford owned both of the known examples of this variety, the other one graded Very Fine from the F.C.C. Boyd Estate. When this piece was cataloged for the Garrett Collection, it was described as "apparently unique." A few years earlier, Walter Breen discussed the Boyd Estate coin in his Proof Encyclopedia, and stated that it was the only one known.
In the Stack's catalog of the Ford Collection (Part IX, May 2005), Michael Hodder wrote that "there is nary a mark on the coin and it must look much as it did the day it was struck." The fields are fully reflective with nicely detailed central devices, save for slight weakness at the very center on each side, from dies that were apparently spaced a bit too far apart. Some faint, rather fresh appearing pinscratches can be seen on the rose petal below ER of AMERICANA, from an attempt to remove a tiny spot, and clearly visible on the Ford catalog color plate. Otherwise, we concur that there is nary a mark on either side.
Struck on a wide 28.2 mm. planchet, the border beads on each side are fully and completely visible. Breen described this variety as a pattern, a term used in the Garrett catalog, although more recently Hodder has called it an off-metal strike. Regardless of what name it is given, this is the finer of just two known examples, and a must have piece for the advanced colonial specialist.
