Description

Choice Mint State 1837 Classic Half Eagle Rarity

1837 $5 MS64 PCGS. Breen-6512, Large Date, Large 5, McCloskey 2-B, R.3. A satiny, especially frosty Classic Head half eagle that displays pinpoint definition throughout. Only a few insignificant luster grazes are noticed on the obverse and the only mentionable distraction on the reverse is a wispy, vertical scratch through the eagle's beak. The 1837 is a scarcer issue in Mint State, yet usually brings little or no premium over the more available issues that precede it. In their Gold Encyclopedia, Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth explained: "Despite a seemingly high mintage, this is actually a semi-scarce date, with a raw rarity on par with that of the 1838-D. Examples up to About Uncirculated are relatively easy to find, but Mint State examples are decidedly rare." Population: 10 in 64, 3 finer (11/06).(Registry values: P1)
