Exquisite SP66 Brown 1724 Hibernia Halfpenny Pattern
Nelson-13, Ex: Ford
, One of Just 10 Known

1724 1/2P Hibernia Halfpenny SP66 Brown PCGS. CAC. Nelson-13, unlisted in Breen. 123.7 grains. This extremely rare Hibernia pattern is one of just 10 similar pieces known. The cataloger for the Ford auction described this piece as a "Gem Brilliant Proof," and PCGS similarly acknowledges the coin's special nature. Certainly, the strike is distinctive and sharp, and the smooth, virtually flawless violet-brown and mahogany surfaces are indicative of unusual care. As written in the Ford catalog, "The piece, overall, is absolutely stunning and is without question the finest known [bold theirs]." The collector who takes this coin in-hand should have no reason to disagree.
Ex: Henry Chapman, 1910; believed Newcomer-Green (per the Ford catalog); F.C.C. Boyd Estate; The John J. Ford, Jr. Collection Part VII (Stack's, 1/05), lot 92.
