Description

Important MS63 Brown
1787 New Jersey Copper
Outlined Shield, Maris 46-e

1787 COPPER New Jersey Copper, Outlined Shield MS63 Brown PCGS. Maris-46e, R.1. Struck from an advanced state of the dies as evidenced by the lack of detail on the inner curve of the horse's neck and the pronounced bulging of the die in the date area (which still shows full digits). The center of the reverse is weak, from die damage rather than wear, as always seen on this variety. Remarkably well centered, this piece shows full sawtooth denticles on both sides and the brown patina is glossy with minor planchet porosity. Heavily die clashed with strong evidence of the outline of the shield in the right obverse field. A 1% curved clip at 5:30 is mint-made. One of the finest, if not the finest 46e extant. Listed on page 66 of the 2009 Guide Book.
Ex: FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2006), lot 3005; Troy Wiseman Collection, Part Two (Heritage, 1/2007), lot 737.
