Description

Curved Bust 1793 Chain Cent, S-2, XF40

1793 Chain 1C AMERICA XF40 PCGS. S-2, B-2, High R.4. The Chain cents were the first coins produced at the fledgling Philadelphia Mint in late February and early March 1793. The earliest dated delivery of these coins was March 1, 1793. Based on the research of R.W. Julian, Breen suggested that the first "Chain cents may have been ceremonially struck on Washington's birthday, Friday, February 22." Production continued less than two weeks, with the final Chain cent delivery dated March 12, 1793. An average of 3,000 coins per day seems quite small until the inexperience of the entire Mint staff is considered. Assuming a 12-hour workday, that is an average of four coins per minute, or one every 15 seconds.
Five die varieties were produced, including the famous AMERI variety, the somewhat less well-known Periods variety, the Wide LIBERTY rarity with just two known, the Curved Bust variety offered here, and the Straight Bust variety that makes up about half of the entire surviving population of the design. In his Large Cent Encyclopedia, Walter Breen suggested that the AMERI cents and these Curved Bust cents were all part of the initial delivery of 11,178 pieces on March 1.
This example is a later die state with a bulge at the base of 793 in the date. Both sides exhibit a few small rim bruises and other minor defects, but the surfaces are smooth with a dark chocolate obverse, and a wood grain reverse. EAC 20.
