Description

Rare 5D Over 50 1818 Half Eagle
Borderline Uncirculated, BD-3

1818 $5 5D Over 50 AU58 NGC. Breen-6472, BD-3, R.5. Bass-Dannreuther b/b with clashed letters from LIBERTY within the shield. The rarest of the three die pairings known for the date. Each receives a separate Guide Book listing, since BD-2 is the STATESOF variety, while the D in the denomination for BD-3 is entered over an errant 0. The engraver was presumably in the habit of cutting half dollar dies, which were certainly more prevalent than their half eagle counterparts. This is a boldly struck piece that has only minimal friction on the eyebrow and forecurl. The green-gold surfaces lack noticeable marks, and the extent of luster throughout the margins and devices is consistent with that of higher certified grades for this difficult type.(Registry values: P4)
