Description
Richly Toned 1794 Half Dime, AU58
V-4, LM-4
1794 H10C AU58 NGC. CAC. V-4, LM-4, R.4. Four varieties are
known for half dimes dated 1794, coins that were all struck early
in 1795, according to Mint records. It was not until March 1795
that the first half dimes were delivered by the chief coiner to the
Mint treasurer. In the past, some have speculated that the coins
were actually struck in 1794 but not delivered until March 1795,
but standard operating procedure at that time precludes such a
possibility. When a deposit of silver was made at the Mint, coins
were minted as soon as possible and returned to the depositor in a
timely manner, thus no coins sat around the Mint for months without
a claim. This pleasing piece has vibrant gold, teal, and blue
toning with underlying prooflike surfaces and only a trace of wear
on the high points. An upper-end example of this important
first-year issue.(Registry values: P6)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 22ZT, PCGS# 4250, GSID# 3717)
