Description

Sharp 1796 Dime
AU53, JR-4

1796 10C AU53 PCGS. CAC. JR-4, R.4. The TY in LIBERTY touch at the peak of the letters, and the first star is distant from the curls. A pair of berries below the upright of the E in UNITED further confirms this scarce die marriage.
Whispers of purple, electric-blue, and golden-brown patina concentrate at the margins of this AU53 example, being somewhat more extensive and deeper in hue on the reverse. The central reverse is silvery in color, while that on the obverse reveals traces of light tan. Liberty's hair and drapery exhibit sharp definition, as do most of the eagle's wing and tail feathers. The design features are well centered on the planchet, and all of the dentilation shows on both sides. The surfaces retain traces of luster in the recesses, and are only lightly marked.(Registry values: P7)
