Gorgeous 1802 JR-2 Dime, MS61
The Finest Known

1802 10C MS61 NGC. JR-2, R.5. Any serious student of the Draped Bust dime series will immediately recognize that the example offered here is actually well struck, despite profound weakness in Liberty's face and an obvious lack of detail in the lower right quadrant of the reverse. The aforementioned poorly defined areas are the result of die deterioration. In fact, in this middle to late die state, a portion of the reverse die is sinking. The unintentional void created by the reverse die damage prevented proper metal flow and both sides were affected.
Despite its inopportune beginnings--being the product of a crippled die--this example boasts considerable eye appeal. The surfaces are pleasantly original and possess a semiprooflikeness that has been observed on other late die state, high grade JR-2 survivors. Amber hues dominate both sides of this Mint State piece while attractive electric-blue iridescence clings to the devices throughout. A marvelous display!
Disregarding the four individual varieties of this date, NGC has certified only five Uncirculated examples of 1802 dimes: three in MS61 and two at the MS62 level (11/08). However, this is believed to be the finest known and only Mint State 1802 JR-2 dime extant. It was part of our July 2008 sale of the Ed Price Collection, as noted on the NGC label. For that auction catalog, Ed Price offered the following personal commentary: "This has always been one of my favorite coins in the collection. The weak obverse die state is a wonderful example of the varied output of the first U.S. Mint."
