1874-CC Seated Liberty Dime, AU50
Rare With Arrows Date
Acknowledged Key to the Series

1874-CC 10C Arrows AU50 PCGS. CAC. The 1874-CC Seated Liberty dime with Arrows boasts a minuscule mintage of 10,817 pieces. The date circulated heavily at the time of issue, and many pieces have surface problems, probably resulting from improperly prepared planchets using unalloyed silver from the famous Comstock Lode. In his series reference on Seated Liberty dimes, Brian Greer remarks:

"The unquestioned key to the series [excluding the uncollectible 1873-CC No Arrows]. Rare in any grade, and probably a full R6 in problem-free condition. Very few mint state pieces exist. Under intense demand and currently bringing well in excess of Trends prices, when available."

The rarity of the 1874-CC Arrows dime is illustrated by the fact that Louis Eliasberg settled for a VG-8 example in his magnificent collection. Currently, PCGS has certified only this specimen in AU50, with four examples finer, while NGC has graded three coins in AU50, with two finer (8/10).
The arrows at the date were added in 1873, to denote a weight increase mandated by the Mint Act of February 12, 1873. The With Arrows motif was only implemented on dimes of 1873 and 1874, creating a two-year design that is especially popular with type collectors.
The present coin is a very rare AU50 example, with lightly abraded silver-gray surfaces. Traces of mint luster cling to protected areas around the devices. The design elements are well struck in most areas, with just a touch of softness showing on Liberty's head and UN in UNITED. A diagnostic thin, curving die break can be seen through the mintmark. This is only the tenth time Heritage has been privileged to offer an 1874-CC Arrows dime in AU50 condition. The opportunity to acquire this rare key in relatively high grade may not recur for years.
