Description

Deeply Toned 1877 Seated Quarter, MS68

1877 25C MS68 NGC. The deep, iridescent mottled toning on the obverse is an unusual blend of deep amber, cinnamon, and ocean-blue, heaviest around the rims and with centers that are still silver-colored. The reverse has much lighter golden patina around the rims, occasionally deepening to brown and blue. An interesting, small patch of prooflikeness is noted on the reverse at ED, but elsewhere the surfaces show mostly consistent, satiny luster. The strike is exceptionally bold, bringing out the detail and also articulating the clash marks visible in the obverse fields, from the high points of the reverse. Numerous small die cracks appear on both sides, most notably one on the reverse that joins most of the peripheral lettering. Of the nearly 11 million examples of this plentiful issue, this piece appears to have been struck from one of the dies that was approaching the end of its useful life. Census: 7 in 68, 0 finer (11/08).(Registry values: P1)
