Notable MS63 Full Head 1918/7-S Quarter

1918/7-S 25C MS63 Full Head NGC. FS-008.5. Most authentication questions involving Standing Liberty quarters surround the high-profile key 1916 issue. More rarely, the 1918/7-S overdate comes in for scrutiny, this because most attempts to replicate it are merely crude chasings of metal in the area of the date, easily identified by even those with a rudimentary sense of alteration detection.
Mary Sauvain, in her October 2, 1991 Coin World column "The coin detective", highlights a diagnostic that, while not present on all overdated Standing Liberty quarters, is nonetheless a solid indicator of authenticity where found. After a minority of strikes from the obverse die, it became clashed, and the most prominent evidence of that clash is found near Liberty's lower legs, most notably an incuse "E" visible to the left of her bare left (facing) leg. (Interestingly, the present example does not show the other die diagnostic highlighted by Sauvain in the same column, a die chip to the left of the star next to the artist's monogram.)
The present Select example is authentically attractive and well-defined by the standards of this Guide Book variety, satisfying the qualifications for Full Head status. Generally satiny luster enlivens each side, and delicate gold and silver-blue tints drape the surfaces. The date area is bold, particularly the all-important final digit, and the eye appeal is impressive. A few light abrasions in the head area account for the grade. Census: 2 in 63 Full Head, 5 finer (11/08).
