Condition Rarity 1918/7-S Quarter
MS64 Full Head

1918/7-S 25C MS64 Full Head NGC. FS-008.5. The 1918/7-S Standing Liberty quarter represents one of the most sought-after of American minting varieties, and is an important key to the series. In his fourth edition Standing Liberty Quarters treatise, J.H. Cline writes of this issue: "Discovered in 1937, most had circulated by then. Since there are no records to substantiate the total mintage of this piece, the total mintage could be considerably less than 7,500 pieces. Perhaps as few as 2,000-2,500?"
The availability of 1918/7-S quarters in circulated grades is evident from inspection of NGC/PCGS population figures, that indicate several hundred examples grading About Good to About Uncirculated. Slightly more than 100 Mint State coins have been graded, primarily in MS62 to MS64 grades.
Full Head 1918/7-S quarters are rare. Cline says simply: "A few struck with Full Heads: about 12 pieces." NGC and PCGS have certified fewer than 40 Full Head coins, mainly in Very Fine to About Uncirculated. Full Head Mint State examples are nearly unobtainable.
The present near-Gem is thus a very special offering. It is basically brilliant, with just the slightest blush of silver-gold on the radiantly lustrous surfaces. Three clear olive sprigs show on Liberty's headdress, and there is a clear separation between the hair and forehead. A few minor ticks barely preclude Gem classification. Census: 5 in 64 Full Head, 0 finer (10/08).
