Sharply Struck 1926-S Quarter
MS66 Full Head
1926-S 25C MS66 Full Head NGC. The 1926-S quarter, sporting
a mintage of 2,700,000 pieces, is among the most weakly struck of
all San Francisco coins in the 1920s. Indeed, J.H. Cline, in his
fourth edition Standing Liberty Quarters, estimates that one
percent or less were struck with Full Heads.Weak strikes are not the only problem with 1926-S quarters--there simply are not that many Mint State pieces available. Paul Green, in an August 12, 2003 Numismatic News article titled "1926-S Standing Liberty Quarter Attractive," presents a tentative explanation for this paucity:
"... quarters (were) a good deal of money for collectors of the day. Back in 1926, there were not that many people collecting quarters, and if some did save nice new quarters each year, just a few years after the 1926-S was released the stock market crashed and the Great Depression began. A lot of nice coins almost certainly were returned to circulation by financially strapped owners during the tough years that followed, and a date like the 1926-S would have been a leading candidate."
The Premium Gem offered in this lot is one of the few coins struck with a Full Head. Strong definition is apparent on the chain mail and stars as well, though two or three of the lower rivets reveal the usual weakness. Vibrant luster invigorates both sides, each of which is color free and impeccably preserved. Die polish lines are visible in the fields, especially those on the reverse. In summary, this piece exhibits great technical quality and aesthetic appeal. Census: 4 in 66 Full Head, 0 finer (11/08).(Registry values: N7079)
