Attractive 1803 Small Reverse Stars BD-1 Eagle, AU53
1803 $10 Small Stars Reverse AU53 NGC. Breen-6844, Taraszka-26, BD-1, High R.5. Official records indicate a mintage of 15,017 eagles for the year 1803. This mintage is shared between six different die marriages, all with the same obverse die. Anthony Taraszka and Harry Bass both concluded that the present variety was first in the die emission sequence because of the number of edge reeds. Eagles from 1799 through 1801 all have 131 edge reeds. There are no eagles dated 1802. The 1803 BD-1 eagle has 131 edge reeds, in keeping with the earlier years. All other 1803 eagle varieties and the eagles of 1804 have either 130 or 126 edge reeds, indicating a break in the production series after BD-1. The variety is very scarce today, with an only 30-40 survivors extant. The obverse die is perfect, with no clashing, lapping or cracks. The reverse can be distinguished by the small stars combined with the long arrows (one extending past N and another extending to the foot of I in UNITED). The reverse die must have failed quickly because the obverse was still perfect when paired with the BD-2 reverse.
The surfaces are even and bright with some luster remaining on both sides. Both sides have attractive, green-gold color and a moderate number of abrasions. A few adjustment marks can be seen on the reverse, primarily in the dentils.(Registry values: P2)
