Description
Classic Near-Mint 1915-S Panama-Pacific Fifty Dollar Round
1915-S $50 Panama-Pacific 50 Dollar Round AU58 NGC. With a net mintage of only 483 pieces, the round version of the grand Panama-Pacific fifty dollar gold piece is the single most elusive of the classic commemoratives, gold or silver, and has a mintage less than half of the 1848 "CAL." quarter eagle to boot. Presumably, a significant number of well-heeled purchasers found the octagonal version intriguing enough to own, but were unwilling to spend the money for a five-coin or ten-coin set, the source of the vast majority of this issue. Modern collectors recognize that the round-format examples are comparatively scarce and offer a premium for them over their eight-sided counterparts.A large number of the fifty dollar Panama-Pacific commemoratives of both varieties were kept as pocket pieces, or else removed from sets and mishandled. Cleaned, worn, and otherwise significantly impaired examples appear on the market, and many collectors who believe that this issue is out of reach otherwise will settle for one of them. A patient numismatist, however, who seeks a lightly rubbed but otherwise untroubled example can find a much more attractive piece for only slightly more outlay. A coin such as this represents a real bargain for such a collector. Minor but distinct friction affects the highpoints, and a number of small handling marks affect the fields. Yet the luster remains strong, and the suitably struck devices are unaffected by unsightly abrasions. The yellow-orange surfaces have a touch of olive near the rims, appropriate given the figure on the obverse. An appealing representative that would fit well in an otherwise Mint State collection of commemorative gold.
