Description
Popular 1839 No Drapery Half, MS63
1839 50C No Drapery MS63 PCGS. Being a single-year subtype adds to the already strong demand for this first-year Seated half dollar issue. 1839 No Drapery halves are relatively common in circulated grades, but their availability drops dramatically in Mint State condition. As of (11/08), PCGS has certified 11 examples at the MS63 level, and only 10 pieces have been graded finer--the best being two MS65 coins. The current offering was obviously an early strike from freshly serviced dies; semiprooflikeness in the fields replaces the cartwheel luster that is ubiquitous to the series. Experts agree that flow lines start to develop after 100 or strikes and prooflike fields become lustrous. Time has naturally blanketed the surfaces with a pleasing gunmetal-gray patina. However, when viewed at an angle and under a light source, this piece erupts into a fireball of amber and magenta coloration and the mirrored fields are most obvious. A splendid specimen.
