1799 Irregular Date, Small Stars Eagle, AU Details

1799 $10 Irregular Date, Small Stars Obverse--Damaged--NCS. AU Details. Breen-6840, B. 4-E, Taraszka-19, R.3. Early Die State. The 17 in the date tip sharply to the right, while the 1 is distant from Liberty's lowest curl, and the point of star 9 grazes the Y in LIBERTY. On the reverse, the left foot of the first A in AMERICA nearly touches the feather, and a leaf tip touches the I in AMERICA. This specimen appears to be one of the issue struck before the B. 4-D, Taraszka-20 issues, as it lacks the obvious die clash marks of the coins struck afterward. This is a lovely coin, with little wear and much luster. The "damage" NCS alludes to is confined to the rims: on the obverse they show light scrapes from about 3 o'clock to 4:30, with some respective scraping on the reverse in about the same location. There is a noticeable rim bump on the reverse at 7 o'clock. Despite these distractions, there is still much to recommend this coin: a bold strike, only a few microscopic abrasions that are consistent with the AU grade details, and few signs of planchet adjustments. This would be a highly pleasing acquisition to specialists of this early and historic coinage series.(Registry values: P2)
