Description

Exceptional, Deeply Mirrored PR64 1836 Gobrecht Dollar
Judd-60 Original, Die Alignment I

1836 P$1 Name on Base, Judd-60 Original, Pollock-65, R.1, PR64 NGC. Silver. Plain Edge. Die Alignment I (the center of Liberty's head is opposite DO in DOLLAR). The die scratch plainly shows above the eagle's wing pointing toward the AT of STATES. This die scratch is seen only on so-called First Originals struck in late December 1836 and the Second Originals from March 1837. After an initial production run in early December of approximately 400 coins, another 600 pieces were struck later that month. These pieces were deposited with a local bank and as a result many are found circulated. This piece obviously was seen as something special and set aside at that time.
Recently the status of the 1836-dated dollars have been questioned. Some pieces are more prooflike than proof, but a few examples show fields that are fully the equal of any proof coin struck after 1857. In the opinion of John Dannreuther, these dollars were struck on unburnished planchets which is why most of them are more akin to an early prooflike Morgan dollar than an actual proof. And yet here is a coin that has deeply reflective fields on each side. If the planchet was not burnished, then this must have been an early strike off the relapped dies when Gobrecht dollar production resumed in late December. We have no question about the proof status of this particular coin.
Both obverse and reverse are brilliant in the centers with a light ring of golden-rose toning around the peripheries. We struggle to find any contact marks, even with a magnifier, that would serve as a pedigree identifier in the future. The only mark of any note is a tiny one located on the reverse above the left pellet and to the left of the star above. A stunning example of this beautifully designed coin. Census: 14 in 64, 1 finer (11/08).
