Among the Finest Known 1847 Proof Seated Dollars, PR65 NGC

1847 $1 PR65 NGC. The rarity of this proof 1840s delivery is such that we have not offered a singularly graded example since 1995. That coin sold for $28,000 as lot 5670 in our June 1995 Long Beach Signature Sale. In fact, there are only three certified PR65 examples extant, all of which are registered at NGC (1/02).
There is no distracting striking incompleteness on either side of this toned representative, although accuracy compels us to mention slight softness of detail over the eagle's left (facing) leg feathers and at the top of the left (facing) wing. The outward appearance is one of tan-gray patina, but there are traces of lighter colors intermingled throughout the reverse. The only worthwhile pedigree marker (and it took some time to locate) is a small, well concealed spot of verdigris on the reverse at the tip of the middle arrowhead. Certainly among the finest coins extant from a proof issue that is rarer than the 1844.
Only one die pair has been confirmed among survivors of the 1847 delivery. Bowers, however, suggests that a second die combination may be known. As with all proofs of this era, more work is necessary to determine die marriages and to differentiate between originals and the suspected, but not confirmed restrikes.
