Bold 1909-O Indian Five, MS62

1909-O $5 MS62 PCGS. One of the classic rarities of 20th century American numismatics, the 1909-O is elusive in all grades and especially difficult to locate in Mint State grades. Just 34,200 half eagles were struck in New Orleans during the year, the only gold pieces made in the final year of operations at the Louisiana facility.
The typical 1909-O five is well-struck but with a weak mintmark. This piece has a bold and complete mintmark. The typical example has frosty luster. This one has satiny luster. The delicate rose-gold toning is unusual, as most example have light greenish-gold surfaces.
In the revised second edition of A Handbook of 20th Century United States Gold Coins 1907-1933, Jeff Ambio writes: "The 1909-O is a challenging issue to locate with strong eye appeal. Luster is usually a bit subdued, and most Mint State examples are confined to lower grades due to scattered abrasions." The revised reference was published late in 2008 by Zyrus Press. In the original edition, David Akers presented his opinion of rarity for each issue in various Mint State grades. In the revised edition, Ambio has taken that another step, and provided actual estimates of surviving population, and value, in four different Mint State grade categories. Ambio also provides a roster of significant examples for most issues throughout the four denominations. Collectors should find the revision every bit as valuable a resource as the original edition.(Registry values: N7079)
