Description

Pleasing Apricot-Gold 1926-D Twenty, MS63

1926-D $20 MS63 PCGS. Referencing the February 1934 issue of The Numismatist, Dave Bowers states that "in December 28, 1933, Acting Secretary Henry Morgenthau issued an order for banks and individuals to surrender all gold coins and Gold Certificates in their possession, excepting numismatic coins and quarter eagles ... ." Whatever 1926-D double eagles that did enter the channels of commerce were obviously affected by the government order. However, it is believed that the majority of this issue never left the control of the Treasury Department, making the bulk melting of 1926-D twenties most convenient. The combined population data of the two major services currently totals a staggeringly low 299 coins in all grades.
Thick apricot-gold patination blankets both sides of this Select Uncirculated representative. Slight weakness on the dome of the Capitol--typical for the issue--is noted. The strike elsewhere is sufficient and the luster is pleasing. Without the aid of magnification, only a couple of small abrasions on the rays of the reverse are obvious. Housed in an older generation PCGS holder, this refreshingly original specimen is sure to garner the attention of collectors and dealers alike. Population: 58 in 63, 25 finer (11/08).
