Round 1915-S Panama-Pacific Fifty, MS64
One of Just 483 Pieces Sold
1915-S $50 Panama-Pacific 50 Dollar Round MS64 NGC. CAC. As
a tradition in U.S. numismatics, the commemorative is both an early
concept and a late-blooming idea. An intriguing perspective on the
nature of U.S. commemorative coins appears in a Paul M. Green
article that was published in the August 23, 2005 edition of
Numismatic News. "The use of coins to commemorate events
goes back in time almost as far as coins," writes Green, "for it
did not take long for rulers to figure out that coins were an
excellent way to communicate with the public."This lesson was not lost on the Founding Fathers:
"By the time the American Revolution came along, there had been centuries of use of coins to send messages and commemorate events. The leaders of the move for independence had no mint to crank out coins with the slogans they wanted, but they did have other options such as tokens, medals and Colonial paper issues, and they used them all."
After the Revolution, however, the U.S. Mint struggled to keep up with regular coinage demand, much less think about commemoratives. The first official commemorative design did not come until the Columbian Exposition half dollar in 1892.
Commemorative coinage is a popular specialty within U.S. numismatics, and few coins are so prized as the Panama-Pacific fifty dollar gold pieces. Both the round and octagonal varieties had extremely low net mintages; this attractive Round representative is one of just 483 pieces sold. Both sides have light and swirling luster, a subtle rose-tinged radiance that graces pale butter-yellow surfaces. A few scattered light flaws are of little consequence in the context of the overall eye appeal.(Registry values: N10218)
