Finest Certified 1879-CC Five Dollar, MS62

1879-CC $5 MS62 PCGS. CAC. Writing in 2001, Doug Winter offered this concluding commentary for the 1879-CC half dollar issue in Gold Coins of the Carson City Mint:

"The 1879-CC is the most obtainable Carson City half eagle from the 1870's. It is relatively easy to locate in lower grades and is not even that hard to obtain in the lower range of About Uncirculated. This date becomes rare in the higher About Uncirculated grades and it is extremely rare in Mint State. I am aware of just two or three Uncirculated 1879-CC half eagles and none of these grade higher than Mint State-61."

After almost a decade, the numbers have nudged up slightly; there are now seven Mint State 1879-CC half eagles in the combined certified population, four graded by NGC and three by PCGS, a number that doubtless includes a resubmission or two (12/10). In addition, the "alpha coin" of the date is no longer graded MS61, as it was when Winter wrote and single examples from NGC and PCGS were at the top of his condition census. Now the honor belongs to a single MS62 coin, the present PCGS-certified piece, which also bears a CAC green label that further attests to its condition.
The overall detail is impressive, particularly on the peripheral obverse stars, which show full centers. The central devices too show excellent definition, and sun-yellow fields are warmly lustrous. Aside from a few light abrasions at the back of Liberty's neck, this coin shows little more than an assortment of wispy, though ultimately grade-defining marks. A remarkable trophy for the Carson City enthusiast who collects at the highest levels.(Registry values: P3)
