Beautiful 1915-S Panama-Pacific $50 Round

1915-S $50 Panama-Pacific 50 Dollar Round MS62 NGC. One of the ultimate representations of commemorative coinage, the massive Pan-Pac $50 Round is also among of the most visually impressive coins in U.S. numismatics. The original mintage of the round variety was 1,500 pieces for distribution and 9 coins for assay purposes. Only 483 examples of the round $50 were sold at what was then the princely sum of $100 and the balance of the mintage was melted. The symbolic design is the masterful work of Robert Aitken, whose initials RA can be found on the reverse below the pine branch upon which the owl is perched.
The eye appeal of this lovely, totally original example is significantly finer than its technical merits. As is often found, the sheer heft of the issue combined with the softness of the gold alloy has resulted in scattered luster grazes on the major design elements. Both sides have acquired a pleasing reddish tint and boast full, radiant luster.(Registry values: N7079)
