Description

1852 Assay Office of Gold Fifty Dollar Slug

1852 $50 Assay Office Fifty Dollar, 900 Thous. XF40 PCGS. K-14, High R.5. The outer obverse margin is inscribed UNITED STATES ASSAY OFFICE OF GOLD SAN FRANCISCO CALIFORNIA 1852. Inside this inscription is a circle of beads around the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA FIFTY DOLLARS, with an eagle and shield design. Just above is a ribbon with the gold fineness 900 FINE. This example is typical of most survivors with light surface marks and a few tiny rim bruises, especially at the corners. While the octagonal design gave these pieces more of an "ingot" feel, it was probably not the best choice for a circulating coinage. Listed on page 351 of the 2007 Guide Book.
