Description
Remarkable MS69 1881-S Morgan Dollar
Ex: Jack Lee 1, Jack Lee 2
One of Only Two Pieces Certified as MS69
1881-S $1 MS69 PCGS. CAC. Ex: Jack Lee 1/Jack Lee 2. This
phenomenal silver type coin appeared in both of Jack Lee's
famous and formidable collections of Morgan dollars. Jack Lee's
third collection, which Heritage auctioned in November 2005, was
not a specialized set but just included coins (such as an 1870-S
dollar) that he particularly enjoyed. This past year, Heritage has
also offered the Jack Lee inventory at the time of his passing, in
addition to his #1 all-time PCGS Registry Set of Lincoln cents. The
present piece is one of only two 1881-S dollars that have earned
the coveted MS69 grade from either NGC or PCGS. Heritage auctioned
the other MS69 1881-S dollar as well, in January 2002 as
part of the Mike Casper Collection. As one might expect from such an exceptional grade, the current lot ranks among the finest Morgan dollars, and should be viewed if at all possible, simply to appreciate its spectacular quality. Many '81-S dollars have an intricate strike, blazing luster, and clean surfaces. What separates this coin from its peers is the virtual absence of abrasions. Even when examined at length beneath a loupe, no marks are readily found. A tiny, curly lintmark between the D in GOD and the eagle's head is strictly of mint origin, and also provides an identifier for any future auction appearances.
The strike is equally exemplary, with full hair detail above the ear and exquisite feather definition on the eagle's breast. Essentially brilliant, although the careful observer will locate traces of golden toning. It boggles the mind that this immaculate piece could have once jingled within a canvas bag holding a thousand coins. Perhaps, instead, it was set aside by the coiner, possibly for presentation to a visiting notable. Population: 2 in 69, 0 finer (11/08).
