Impressive 1884-S Select Dollar

1884-S $1 MS63 PCGS. Ex: Wayne Miller Collection. Most of the 3.2 million 1884-S Morgan dollar mintage probably went into circulation. Also, some undistributed bags may have been melted under the provisions of the 1918 Pittman Act. Relatively few Mint State coins were saved until later years, with the result that Uncirculated pieces are elusive today.
David Bowers (1993) writes: "... it is known that limited numbers of this issue dribbled out from storage in the Treasury Building in Washington, D.C. as early as the early 1930s, and continuing though at least the very early 1950s. If any full bags were paid out, I have not learned of the situation." Bowers goes on to say that many 1884-S dollars were released to banks from storage at the San Francisco Mint in 1926, and again in the 1950s. He believes that several thousand coins, mostly in lower Mint State grades, went into the hands of dealers, investors, and collectors during the 1950s and early 1960s.
Each side of this Select example has a pleasing satiny finish with strong luster. Whispers of light grayish tan make an occasional appearance, and an impressive strike brings about sharper design features than usually seen. Both faces are quite well preserved. It is only the presence of a small milling mark in the field above the eagle's head that probably denies the attainment of a higher grade. Population: 36 in 63, 16 finer (11/08).
