Rare White Metal 1826 Erie Canal Medal

1826 Erie Canal Completion Medal, HK-1, R.6, Uncertified. White metal, 45mm. This important medal opens the classic Hibler-Kappen reference, and marks the completion of the Erie Canal, or the "Union of the Erie with the Atlantic" as the obverse legend states. Ground was broken for the Canal project on July 4, 1817 and was completed October 26, 1825. This medal was issued by the City of New York with dies by Charles Cushing Wright and designs by Archibald Robertson. Dove-gray fields exhibit expected granularity. White luster brightens protected areas. Uncirculated with no evidence of friction, but a horizontal pinscratch crosses the obverse field at elbow level with Pan and Poseidon. The original box of issue accompanies. It is in VF to XF condition with charming, unfaded paper inlays.
