Description
Amazing 1889-CC Morgan Dollar Rarity, MS65
1889-CC $1 MS65 NGC. In August 1885, the Carson City Mint produced 28,000 Morgan dollars, the final installment of the 228,000 coins minted that year. Four years and three months later, in October 1889, that facility produced its next quantity of silver dollars, rounding out the year with a total production of 350,000 coins. It seems that the vast majority of those coins minted were actually paid out and entered circulation in the late 19th century. The result of that activity is a plentiful supply (for a price) of worn examples. A second result is a lack of available Mint State pieces. Beginning in the early 1930s, the Treasury paid out individual pieces and small groups, but never any large quantities or bag lots. It seems that those piece that are available today have these payouts as their source. As one of the top Morgan dollar rarities, the 1889-CC is desirable in all grades. Quantities of this issue are all but unknown today with bag lots almost of legendary status, none having been reliably reported in more than twenty-five years. As a major Morgan rarity, the '89-CC has perhaps been a bit over promoted in the past. It is usually available for a price in lower circulated grades, and even lower grade Uncirculated pieces are often available at public auction and from major dealers' fixed price lists. However, Gems are very rare and are only available when a major collection is dispersed.
The Carson City Mint received 10 obverse dies dated 1889 for this coinage, and combined those with seven reverse dies. However, only three specific varieties are listed in the current Van Allen-Mallis reference: VAM-1 - Normal dies; VAM-2 - High 9, doubled 1; VAM-3 - Far date. This example appears to be the High 9 obverse, although it has a faint die crack through the date that is not visible in the VAM plate. The reverse has a CC mintmark tilted to the left, but placed farther right than the piece illustrated in the VAM reference. In addition to the faint crack through the date, the obverse has minor die cracks through the peripheral design elements. Likewise, the reverse has peripheral die cracks through much of the legend.
The surfaces on this coin are extraordinarily clean with only a few tiny blemishes on either side. The luster has the satiny texture that is invariably seen on 1889-CC dollars, although it is not prooflike as often encountered. Dave Bowers suggests that 25% of all high grade 1889-CC dollars are prooflike. While Carson City dollars in general are known for their exuberant, frosted texture, the '89-CC for some reason is always seen with a more subdued, satiny and reflective appearance. Well struck, each side is free from any trace of color.
Extremely rare as a Gem, with just four other MS65 examples certified by NGC, including one prooflike piece, and one other amazing coin graded MS67. Comparatively, PCGS has certified a single MS65 and one MS68. The present coin ranks among the top eight NGC or PCGS certified examples of the issue, providing an incredible opportunity for the advanced Morgan dollar connoisseur and specialist.
