Description
Exceptional Mid-Condition Census 1799 Cent
1799 VF 25 NGC. S-189, High R.2. The Perfect Date variety. The 1799 cent is easily one of the most famous and highly coveted of all U.S. coins. Unknown above AU 50, the vast majority of survivors are in the Good to Fine grade range. This is the date that began Joseph Mickley on his collecting odyssey in the 19th century. The story goes that 17-year old Mickley wanted a coin of his birth year, 1799. He found it to be a very difficult task even in 1816, and the pursuit of this coin led him along other numismatic avenues and he eventually became known as the "Father of American Coin Collecting."This coin has an exceptional appearance for a 1799 cent. The surfaces are light brown overall with just the faintest darkening in the right obverse field. The digits in the date are well defined, but LIBERTY is soft, as often seen. Even though used extensively in the channels of commerce, most of the striking details are quite well brought up for the grade, and with magnification a couple of faint, squiggly die cracks can be made out in the hair. A couple of field marks are noted, the most obvious ones being near the obverse rim at 8 o'clock and a short one below Liberty's chin. This is the finest 1799 we have handled since the VF 30 we sold in the 1980 ANA Auction. As such it is tied with several other pieces as a mid-condition census coin. Sure to elicit much interest from collectors of early copper.
