Description
Captivating Proof 1863 Seated Dollar in Gorgeous Gem Condition
1863 $1 PR 65 NGC. Following the onset of the Civil War, the price of silver coins rose above face value and the Mint made it more difficult for collectors to acquire proofs with greenbacks. Despite this obstacle, however, Bowers concludes that numismatists in such northern cities as New York, Boston, and Philadelphia purchased many of the 460 proof Seated dollars produced in 1863. The same author estimates that more than 10 of these coins are extant today at or above the Gem level. Recent population data seems to confirm this estimate as NGC and PCGS combined report 11 coins in MS 65 with 9 finer (2/00).This is a simply remarkable specimen whose deeply mirrored surfaces are bathed in swirls of blue-gray and champagne colored iridescence. There are no visible post-production impairments, but a lone lint mark (as struck) on the reverse between the O in ONE and the lower olive leaves could serve as a useful pedigree marker. The desirability of this piece is further enhanced by the scarcity of business strike 1863 silver dollars.
