Description

Near-Mint State Octagonal Pan-Pac Fifty

1915-S $50 Octagonal AU55 PCGS. More plentiful than the Round version. The more-novel Octagonal sold better, leaving more examples of the Round to be melted later, resulting in the final mintage figures of 645 for the Octagonal and 483 for the Round. Light wear can be seen on Minerva's helmet, and on the owl's right (facing) wing and legs. There are also a few light abrasions, visible with a loupe, on Minerva's cheek. It is, nonetheless, highly doubtful that this delightful and lovely coin ever circulated. (Imagine today bringing a one-ounce American eagle gold piece into the supermarket.) It is much more likely that this coin was carried as a pocket piece for a short while before escalating values stopped that practice, or else the slight wear is the result of longtime cabinet friction and/or careless handling. The surfaces have mellowed to a deep greenish-gold hue, and there are no other visible distractions. Certified in a green label holder.
