Description

AU55 Sharpness 1795 Half Eagle

1795 $5 Small Eagle--Damaged, Cleaned--ANACS. AU55 Details. B. 1-B, Breen-6412, B. 1-B, R.4. This piece is lightly hairlined from a long-ago wipe, but has retoned in orange shades. A small quarter-moon counterstamp near Liberty's shoulder causes a slight bulge in the reverse field, and thorough investigation reveals a couple of subtle rim bruises on each side. A brief horizontal pinscratch on the neck provides the only other relevant mark. Considerable luster flashes from the legends and devices, and the eagle's wings in particular are exquisitely detailed. The 1795 Small Eagle half eagle is the first gold issue to be produced by the U.S. Mint. The low mintage of 8,707 pieces was divided between twelve known die marriages.(Registry values: P5)
