Description

1804 1C Restrike MS62 Red and Brown NGC. According to Breen, these coins were struck about 1858 by persons unknown, possibly Mickley or Dickeson, from discarded dies sold by the mint in 1833 as scrap metal. The dies were heavily rusted, and the obverse die was prominently cracked. The obverse date was altered from 1803 to 1804 to strike a "key date." The reverse die was formerly used to strike 1820-dated cents. Mostly medium brown with initial red near design recesses. The reverse is softly struck. EAC 60+.
