Description

Splendid Final-Year 1883 Shield Nickel, MS67 NGC

1883 5C MS67 NGC. Not only is the 1883 the final issue in the Shield Nickel series, but it is also the most plentiful in Mint State. It should come as surprise that this date is a favorite among type collectors. On the other hand, few numismatists will have the opportunity to own a Superb Gem as both major grading services report only 17 examples in MS67 and none finer (10/02). This radiant, brightly lustrous example is untoned save for the lightest blushes of pale golden tinting in select peripheral areas. Every feature is fully defined, and there is not a single blemish of note. Struck from dies that had started to break up, there are numerous light and moderate cracks (as produced) around the peripheries.
