Description

Very Rare MS63 Brown 1922 Plain Cent

1922 No D 1C Strong Reverse MS63 Brown NGC. FS-013.2. Die Pair Two. This is by far the most desirable die pair of this elusive variety. There is no trace of the mintmark and the highpoint detail of Lincoln, while somewhat soft, is about as sharp as one can expect considering the advanced die state. The reverse is quite strongly detailed. As most Lincoln cent collectors know, this is actually an error, as all cents struck in 1922 were produced in the Denver mint. The mintmark omission was caused by foreign material clogging the dies and poor striking pressure. This die pairing is the most popular of the several that exist, due in part, to the strength of detail on both sides. The surfaces are glossy and the even brown patina is only interrupted by the occasional blue or reddish accent of color. A couple of tiny specks of carbon are present on each side but there are no obvious abrasions. Population: 7 in 63, 0 finer (7/03).
