Stellar Gem 1937-D Three-Legged Nickel

1937-D 5C Three-Legged MS65 PCGS. FS-020.2. Easily the most famous late die state for 20th century American coinage, the Three-Legged 1937-D variety resulted from heavy die polishing that effaced one of the bison's forelegs. The Buffalo nickel series seems unusually prone to such flaws, with the so-called "Three-and-a-Half Legs" variety for 1936-D and a number of obverses with a missing feather behind the Indian's head. Still, the prominent nature of the 1937-D variant and its early discovery and publicity assured its lasting notoriety. At least one advertiser was touting such pieces by 1938, and it remains one of the most popular Buffalo nickels to this day.
While both sides of each Three-Legged nickel display the effects of heavy stress from overuse, it is important to note that such overwork was not an isolated case. As David Lange (2006) notes, "The dies for this issue were used far too long, and they reveal light to very heavy erosion." He further notes that the Three-Legged variety was the most prominent example of overuse, and that the Denver Mint more frequently used dies past their prime than either Philadelphia or San Francisco.
This attractive Mint State example displays uncommonly strong luster and above-average detail on the obverse. Vivid orange-gold and rose patina graces both sides. Die rust and erosion are plain on the reverse, though not as strong as on some examples; this is most noticeable below the bison, where the line of pits is faint. The overall appearance is clean, and only minor grazes affect the surfaces. PCGS has certified only four examples finer (4/07).(Registry values: N4719)
