Description

Near-Mint 1944 Steel Cent

1944 Steel Cent AU 58 NGC. Aside from the copper strikings of 1943, the steel cents of 1944 are undoubtedly the most desirable off-metal coins in U.S. error collecting. While the 1944 wrong-metal coins are as rare as their 1943 counterparts, they did not receive the initial attention and notoriety as the 1943 version. Yet, all are highly desirable to advanced collectors with only 20 or so pieces believed extant from the Philadelphia mint from this year. The obverse of this example is bright and lustrous with a few darker specks while the reverse is a bit more subdued with some evidence of brown oxidation on that side. Apparently zinc-coated steel planchets were even more difficult to strike than copper as there is pronounced softness of detail on Lincoln's hair and the O in ONE. A high grade example of this rare wrong-metal striking.
